Intersections of LGBTQ Identity and ART

How important is “art” to individual self-expression and the cultural ethos of a community? How does LGBTQ+ identity intersect with other identities an artist brings to her/his/their work? What is the role of economic forces in artists’ ability to create art as well as to achieve sustainable livelihoods? Are there unique experiences, challenges and/or advantages encountered by LGBTQ+ artists, economically and otherwise?

Intersections of LGBTQ Identity and MASS MEDIA

How have historical representations of “gay” characters in mass media (film, television, radio) changed over time? Have books and theater followed the same trends? What impact has the rise of online sources of information and contact had on discourse about LGBTQ+ identity? How have educational institutions responded to advances in technology, including Artificial Intelligence, as they impact perceptions of "fact," "credibility," "authorship" and more?

Intersections of LGBTQ Identity and LITERATURE / LAW

Beyond literal definitions of authorship or story content, what makes LGBTQ+ literature different from other types or genres of writing? What is it about “queer” literature that is seen as threatening by some and valuable by others? Are different demographic groups affected differently by current policies? How do current attempts to restrict access to works that depict LGBTQ topics create dilemmas for educators, parents and students? How may these dilemmas be addressed productively?

Capstone and Next Steps in the Dialogue

This session will serve as an audience-focused review and wrap-up of the previous dialogues. What did participants learn about the topics under discussion and/or about themselves? Were there recurrent themes across dialogues about intersections between LGBTQ+ identity and the humanities topics, art, literature and media? What next steps may audience members take to continue the conversations?

All of the dialogues will be framed to engage panelists with each other and with the audience. All will be offered in-person and online, via Zoom. The benefit of a hybrid model is that it expands opportunities for participation to anyone with computer access, including those who may not be able to attend in-person. The sessions also will be videotaped for on-demand access after the series has ended.
